Hubert Hurkacz był o krok od awansu do półfinału turnieju ATP rangi Masters 1000 w Toronto. Najlepszy obecnie polski singlista, choć toczył bardzo zacięty bój z drugą rakietą świata, Daniłem Miedwiediewem, to niestety przegrał z Rosjaninem i odpadł z turnieju.

W pierwszym secie od stanu 2:2 w gemach, wygrał kolejne 4. gemy i zwyciężył pierwszego seta wynikiem 6:2. Choć wygląda to na gładkie zwycięstwo, to Polak wcale nie deklasował rywala.
Tenisowa wojna miała miejsce w kolejnych dwóch setach, które niestety padły łupem Daniła Miedwiediewa. Hubert Hurkacz świetnie serwował, ani razu nie dał się przełamać lecz koniec końców przegrał po dwóch tie-breakach. O losach potyczki decydowały szczegóły i doświadczenie. Rosjanin w kluczowych momentach zdobywał o jeden mały punkt więcej, dzięki czemu to on powalczy o wielki finał turnieju. Mimo porażki wstydu nie było. Hubert Hurkacz pokazał się z bardzo dobrej strony, a do zwycięstwa zabrakło bardzo, bardzo nie wiele.
Rywalem Daniła Miedwiediewa w półfinale będzie John Isner. Amerykanin w swoim meczu ograł Gaela Monfilsa w dwóch setach 7:6, 6:4. W drugim półfinale zaś Stefanos Tsitsipas zmierzy się z Reilli Opelką. Grek wyeliminował Caspera Ruuda gładko pokonując go 6:1, 6:4. Amerykanin natomiast rozprawił się z Roberto Bautisto-Agutem wynikiem 6:3, 7:6.
